Summary

A disturbing new vision of terror from the author of Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke。

"Each precious thing I show you in this book is a holy relic from the night we both perished-the night when I combed you from my hair and watered the moon with your blood。

You've lost a lot of blood 。 。 。"

This story, well I guess technically stories, will haunt me for awhile。 Total mind fuck of a book。 LaRocca takes you on a twisty ride, weaving different styles and mediums together to deliver a punch right in your thoughts。

I've been planning to read some of LaRocca's work for a while now, and I am glad I did because I found the themes and the writing style very much my taste (also, horror and gay people? what can be better)。 However, I felt like this novella was cut short。 As some of the other reviewers, I felt drawn into the lives of the characters and quickly became fascinated with them, but there was not enough payoff。 This was still a very enjoyable work despite that, and I am looking forward to reading more w I've been planning to read some of LaRocca's work for a while now, and I am glad I did because I found the themes and the writing style very much my taste (also, horror and gay people? what can be better)。 However, I felt like this novella was cut short。 As some of the other reviewers, I felt drawn into the lives of the characters and quickly became fascinated with them, but there was not enough payoff。 This was still a very enjoyable work despite that, and I am looking forward to reading more writing by LaRocca。 。。。more

I both understood nothing and everything and loved every second of it。

I passively enjoyed this book。 Nothing blew me away, but it was still an interesting read。 Will definitely check out more from LaRocca in the future!

edit: changing my rating to 4。5/5。 even the tiniest bit of distance from reading this book has made me appreciate it even more。 god, what a weird little book。 i dont know how to describe this, and i feel like its best if you go into this not really knowing much。 it made this book an enjoyably frustrating experience for me, trying to piece everything together。 and once the realization of what all this means, it puts everything into perspective。 this book confused me beyond belief, and i honestly edit: changing my rating to 4。5/5。 even the tiniest bit of distance from reading this book has made me appreciate it even more。 god, what a weird little book。 i dont know how to describe this, and i feel like its best if you go into this not really knowing much。 it made this book an enjoyably frustrating experience for me, trying to piece everything together。 and once the realization of what all this means, it puts everything into perspective。 this book confused me beyond belief, and i honestly think i loved it。 。。。more

3。5⭐️I like the “multimedia” style。 Short stories, transcripts from convos + poetry。 Didn’t love the main story, but the story within the story is cool 🤔 may change the rating once I ponder on it for a bit

I was really into the main storyline with Tamsen and Presley。 I was hoping to get more out of the Martyr storyline。 Overall, I wish this book had about 200 more pages。 Give me more!

3。5 stars。 After loving this author’s previous book ‘Things have gotten worse since we last spoke’ I was really looking forward to reading this one。 This author has a great writing style and I loved the grotesque horror in this book just as I did with his last。 This one has a book within a book trope too which was really interesting。Reading about Martyr and why he committed the crimes he did was fascinating。 I really enjoyed the discussions happening between the male couple which we get to read 3。5 stars。 After loving this author’s previous book ‘Things have gotten worse since we last spoke’ I was really looking forward to reading this one。 This author has a great writing style and I loved the grotesque horror in this book just as I did with his last。 This one has a book within a book trope too which was really interesting。Reading about Martyr and why he committed the crimes he did was fascinating。 I really enjoyed the discussions happening between the male couple which we get to read as transcripts that have been recorded on one of their phones。 I found their conversations regarding horror and crimes really interesting to read and also loved that we got to also read the private thoughts that Martyr had during these interactions。 The novella within this book that had been written by Martyr really grabbed my attention at first。 It was so creepy and I really didn’t know where it was going to go。 However as we got more novella chapters it did start to lose my attention a little and I think the ending just went over my head to be honest but I still enjoyed it for the most part。 A very disturbing read that I managed to read in one sitting and really enjoyed my time with。 However my confusion over where the novella ended up going and the way I felt the overall ending was abrupt and ambiguous meant I haven’t rated this book higher。 I definitely enjoyed THGWSWLS more but I will be looking forward to picking up anything this author writes in the future。 。。。more

Many thanks to the author for sending me an e copy in exchange for an honest review。 All thoughts are 100% my own。 What an interesting format of writing a horror story。 I love a story within a story and Eric LaRocca pulled it off perfectly。 There were times I had to remind myself that Martyr Black was not a real person。 I loved how all everything tied together at the end to one horrifying conclusion。 Excellent read。

“…Our brains are made of flypaper and our thoughts are little insects to be captured, caught and killed。” (Pg 25)-This was very interesting for sure! I’m new to the horror genre of books, and they’re a lot easier for me to process (given my squeamish disposition) than I thought I would。 At first I didn’t care much about the characters in the “Novella” sections, given that they weren’t “real,” so I kept thinking, when will we get back to Martyr and Ambrose? What kinda weird stuff are they up to? “…Our brains are made of flypaper and our thoughts are little insects to be captured, caught and killed。” (Pg 25)-This was very interesting for sure! What kinda weird stuff are they up to? But as their conversations continued to linger on surface level pseudo-academic jargon, I got less invested in those two。 The ending of the Novella section made me gasp out loud, so I gave it another star for that alone。 Like damn, what a mindf*ck。 Upon later realizations, the conversations between Martyr and Ambrose take on a MUCH darker tone。 I spent a few minutes retracing their conversations on insects, art and plagiarism and was like “OOOOOH, THAT’S why he said that。 Cool。” But retroactive realizations aren’t as fun as enjoying the conversations the first time around, getting hooked on suspense。 That’s what keeps this from being 5/5 stars for me。 。。。more

I read a digital copy of this book。 Consider me a fully signed up member of the LaRocca fan club。 After reading LaRocca's other work, Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke, I was interested in this one and it did not disappoint。 There are three things going on in this book。 We follow Martyr, a middle-class gay man and his partner, Ambrose, then we have some poems that Martyr has written about the murders he has committed and how much he hates Ambrose, and then we also have a horror nove I read a digital copy of this book。 Consider me a fully signed up member of the LaRocca fan club。 After reading LaRocca's other work, Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke, I was interested in this one and it did not disappoint。 There are three things going on in this book。 We follow Martyr, a middle-class gay man and his partner, Ambrose, then we have some poems that Martyr has written about the murders he has committed and how much he hates Ambrose, and then we also have a horror novella written by Martyr too that was self-published。 This book is smart, it's a novella essentially inside a novella。 This book is horrifying。 It combines murder, body horror, torture, violence and gore in something that I quite have never read before。 This is another one of those books that is hard to summarise but I will say Eric LaRocca is one of the most talented authors I've come across lately。 They definitely have a unique horror twist that I'm yet to truly see replicated。 。。。more

4。5 stars rounded down to 4!Eric Larocca does it again with another fantastically horrifying story。 This book features the element of a book within a book, and throughout you get to read the entire novella that one of the main characters wrote before he and his partner disappeared。 I loved the alternation between the main story and the “bonus” novella, and really enjoyed how creepy and weird the novella itself was。 If you enjoyed his previous book Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke or 4。5 stars rounded down to 4!Eric Larocca does it again with another fantastically horrifying story。 This book features the element of a book within a book, and throughout you get to read the entire novella that one of the main characters wrote before he and his partner disappeared。 I loved the alternation between the main story and the “bonus” novella, and really enjoyed how creepy and weird the novella itself was。 If you enjoyed his previous book Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke or The Troop by Nick Cutter, definitely this one up! 。。。more

I didn't quite know what to expect from this one。 I haven't been able to get my hands on a copy of the author's other (much hyped) book, so I went into this one fairly blind。 The structure and premise was interesting。 The primary "plot" of the novella is actually framed by the discussions of the (fictitious) author with his partner and some additional, loosely related poems, all of which are contextualized by the (again fictitious) editor。 It reminded me of a slightly gentler, yet more abstract I didn't quite know what to expect from this one。 I haven't been able to get my hands on a copy of the author's other (much hyped) book, so I went into this one fairly blind。 The structure and premise was interesting。 The primary "plot" of the novella is actually framed by the discussions of the (fictitious) author with his partner and some additional, loosely related poems, all of which are contextualized by the (again fictitious) editor。 It reminded me of a slightly gentler, yet more abstract "get into the mind of a killer" a la Poppy Z。 Brite。 Without being overly gory, this book definitely had some creepy imagery and effective horror。 The only thing I didn't really like was that it left me wondering if all the questions were answered。。。 It can be frustrating to finish a book and feel like I need to re-read it。 That being said, I liked this one enough to probably re-read it one day :) 。。。more

I really like LaRocca but I just feel like this fell flat for me。 Their writing never fails to amaze me and the prose of it all is astounding。 I think that things just felt a little disjointed for me。 I'm very excited to see the things LaRocca has in the future for us, though, as I really loved Things Have Gotten Worse。I didn't care much for the novella portion of the book, and I really enjoyed Ambrose and Marytr's story。 I didn't very much enjoy the entire video game aspect of the story, it mad I really like LaRocca but I just feel like this fell flat for me。 Their writing never fails to amaze me and the prose of it all is astounding。 I think that things just felt a little disjointed for me。 I'm very excited to see the things LaRocca has in the future for us, though, as I really loved Things Have Gotten Worse。I didn't care much for the novella portion of the book, and I really enjoyed Ambrose and Marytr's story。 I didn't very much enjoy the entire video game aspect of the story, it made that feel very disjointed。 The body horror was written extremely well, though, in these portions, and never failed to deeply unsettle。My one wish was that we got to see more of Ambrose and Martyr like I said。 I'm always a huge fan of that flowery language that I've seen some people criticize on here, but I really, really enjoyed it。 I think the characters were meant to be so pretentious like that, and it worked, and I really loved that part。 。。。more

A masterpiece of aesthetic, visceral horror that is uncomfortable & gorgeous at the same time。 All of Eric Larocca’s work so far has been absolutely pristine, & lingers in the mind with a specific kind of horrific beauty。

DNF。 This was a horrible read。 I was getting aggravated with how many times the author could write “oil” in a single chapter。 Also, the typos were killing me。 There’s nothing worse than reading a book with typos。 Save yourself the time & money & skip this read。 I had such high expectations for this book (mostly because of the cover art) I was significantly let down to say the least。

4 stars | I really enjoyed this book。 It was short but very intense。 I liked how there were kind of three storylines wired into one。 At two-third of the book I got a little bit confused and was scared the book would turn out poorly written, but the ending really surprised me。 The storylines came together really well and over all I really enjoyed this book。

3 1/2 stars for a very disturbing story of a serial killer and his lover who hunt other homosexual young men。 Their conversations, preserved on phone recordings, are interspersed with even more disturbing poetry that may have been written by the killer, or the victims。 There's also an embedded story within the main story, of a young woman game designer and her brother who get caught up in a deadly video game, with lots of oil, mechanical gears, and centipedes everywhere。 Overall, both stories a 3 1/2 stars for a very disturbing story of a serial killer and his lover who hunt other homosexual young men。 Their conversations, preserved on phone recordings, are interspersed with even more disturbing poetry that may have been written by the killer, or the victims。 There's also an embedded story within the main story, of a young woman game designer and her brother who get caught up in a deadly video game, with lots of oil, mechanical gears, and centipedes everywhere。 Overall, both stories are more disturbing than horrific (a point of distinction made by the killer), but the talent of the author definitely shines through。 Drawing courtesy of DeliriouSketches 。。。more
